A group of Maidstone residents have kicked up such a fuss over the state of a busy intersection, a state department has been forced into action to improve its safety.
The residents banded together to petition Maribyrnong City Council and the Department of Transport to improve the intersection at Hampstead Rd, Emu Rd and Crefden St.
According to data from VicRoads, during the five-year period to December 2021, there have been two reported crashes at the intersection although residents indicate there have been many “close calls”.
The “dangerous” intersection is a busy thoroughfare which is near a recently built residential area, a Starbucks drive-through and 7 Eleven and Highpoint Shopping Mall.
Some residents took to social media to voice their concerns about the intersection.
“This intersection needs traffic control implemented ASAP. There is [a] childcare, aged care, gym, function centre, bus stops, residences, and shops around this intersection,” Rahul Singh commented.
“I wonder what else it will take to prioritise this issue being resolved? I have raised this with VicRoads in past with no success.”
Karen Davison added: “As a resident of Eucalyptus Drive, I’ve had so many close calls crossing the road at the light & the amount of accidents I’ve seen is beyond ridiculous. Please don’t wait for a death to occur, fix it now.”
The Department of Transport confirmed it was in the process of fixing the intersection.
“We are working with the City of Maribyrnong on potential ways to make the intersection of Hampstead Rd, Emu Rd and Crefden St in Maidstone safer for all road users,” it said
“We will continue to monitor safety at the intersection while we complete our investigations and will keep the community informed along the way.”
