Young swimmer pursues Olympic dream

WHILE most 11-year-olds are fast asleep at 5am, Ron Golombick is preparing to dive into his 5km morning swim.

The Bentleigh boy in a state-finalist for the 100m butterfly, 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle in his age division.

Ron trains six days a week for 2 hours a day, totalling about 30km of swimming.

He holds the 50m butterfly record for the Moorabbin district school swimming and has a long-term goal of becoming an Olympian.

“I want to try to make a national time or win a state medal which would be a dream for me at this age but once I get into the right age to make the Olympics that’s what I’ll be hopefully doing,” Ron said.

“Swimming is a good way to get fit and it’s really fun.

“You get to meet up with your swim mates and it’s a fun sport that anyone can do.”

Ron’s dad Nadav said his son’s passion and talent for swimming originally came as a surprise because when he was young it took four swimming lessons for him to pluck up the courage to hope in the pool.

Ron Golombick is nominated as a Moorabbin Leader Sports Star.

Leader Local Sports Stars medallists will be named in seven categories including juniors, teams, individuals, and encouragement.

The program is now a national celebration, and junior category winners will be judged for national awards.
