IT wasn’t until Dylan Morrison’s bike broke that his love affair with scooters began.
The Mentone youngster borrowed a scooter from a friend to get to school one day and ended up at a skate park not long after.
About seven years on and the 18-year-old, who has four state Australian Scooter Association titles, is vying to be named best in Australia for the second year running.
“This is what I have the most fun doing,” Dylan said.
Despite a few nasty injuries along the way, the teenager is determined stay at the top of his sport.
He has been knocked out, tore his meniscus, broken his hand, arm and toes and says his back is “pretty much written off”.
“Other than that, I’m constantly battling knee pain and bruising.”
Dylan said his parents, who help run the ASA, are supportive and he’s got the backing of sponsors Elite Scooters and Drop the Anchor Clothing.
Dylan will defend his Australian title at Mordialloc’s Bunker Indoor Skate park on April 29 and 30 before heading overseas for competitions in France, Spain and the United States.
“Ever since I was old enough to make my own decisions, I’ve been at a skate park and it’s kept me out of so much trouble,” Dylan said.
“The skate park isn’t dangerous unless you make it dangerous — it’s up to you to choose what tricks you try.”
Dylan is this week’s Mordialloc Chelsea Junior Sports Star nominee.
Leader Local Sports Stars medallists will be named in seven categories including juniors, teams, individuals, and encouragement.
The program is now a national celebration, and junior category winners will be judged for national awards.
