JANAE Mackrell is on the fast track to success after earning a spot on the Australian team for the 2017 Track and Field Athletics tour in Canada.
The 15-year-old Maribyrnong College student, who trains five times a week, admits that juggling school and sport can be exhausting but said she was driven by a desire to compete on the national stage.
She recently finished third in the 1500m Athletics Victoria State Championships and was a winning member of Maribyrnong College’s Victorian All Schools Cross Country team event.
She said she got a taste for athletics in primary school and was hooked.
“I started doing running at school because of sporting carnivals,” she said.
“I just kept going further each year and competed at higher levels.”
While she said the best part about athletics is making new friends, Janae is determined to climb the sporting rankings.
“I am going to try and go as far as I can with the sport,” she said.
“But I’m not really sure how far that will be.”
She will travel to Canada in a few weeks to be part of the Track and Field Althletics tour event.
Janae is a Maribyrnong Leader Local Sports Star nominee.
