YOUNG Amor Jasika is following in the footsteps of his older brother and father to become a top tennis player.
The 12-year-old, from Greenvale, is ranked the No.1 Australian boys under-12 tennis player – a feat achieved after winning the 12-and-under Australian title at Melbourne Park in December.
He was also the winner of this year’s Hume Tennis and Community Centre Junior Tournament Silver, in the under-14s singles. As well, he placed first in the same category of the Essendon Junior Tournament.
Last year, in the under-12 boys’ singles, Amor won the TCAV Age Championships, the Tennis World Junior Hardcourt Championships and the North Ringwood Junior Tournament.
Amor’s brother Omar, 19, is also a champion player and served as Roger Federer’s hitting partner at the latest Australian Open. Rounding out the family’s tennis trio is father Admir, a professional coach who trains his sons.
Amor said he could not recall a time of his life when he had not played tennis.
“What I enjoy is travelling, winning tournaments, winning against other players, challenging yourself and not giving up,” he said. “I would like to win the Australian Open for my country.”
Amor said he trained with Omar most days at the Hume centre. “I want to be No.1, I will keep trying and I won’t give up,” he said.
Amor has been nominated in the junior category for the Leader Local Sports Star awards.
Leader Local Sports Stars medallists will be named in seven categories including juniors, teams, individuals, and encouragement.
The program is now a national celebration and junior category winners will be judged for national awards.
