Tyler had originally set his sights on competing on the national stage in 2020 after a good run at the Victorian state championships. But after hitting training hard, he decided to give the 2019 competition a go.
“I stepped up my training and my times started to drop and I started to progress,” he said. “I was training hard and the day before entries closed I qualified in two races.”
Tyler qualified for 50m freestyle in 26.38 seconds and 100m freestyle in 58.20 seconds. He said the ultimate goal was to one day represent Australia.
