AT 50 years of age, Mark Galea is still putting up a fight.
The Greenvale boxer remains a force in the ring, with a win/loss record of 22-12.
Galea recently added another Australian title to his honour roll, winning the WBF (World Boxing Federation) Masters Championship in Brisbane in the 46-50 years, 60-64kg category.
The win will enable him to compete at the WBF tournament in Canada in September.
Galea said the victory came down to hard training and a sense of belief.
“I was very confident going in,” he said. “You have to believe in yourself and preparation is everything. Most fights are won in the head.
“It would have to be one of my best wins. To still be fighting at age 50, it’s a great feeling.”
Galea coaches boxing and trains four to five days a week at the Olympic taekwondo Centre in Campbellfield.
“It all comes down to the right balance of soft and hard training,” he said. “If you are old, you can’t push 24/7.”
Galea, who took up martial arts at 16, said his focus was now on competing in international competitions.
