WRFL: West Footscray appoints Troy Beamond as new senior coach

With a new senior coach appointed for the next two years, West Footscray is excited about what lays ahead as it prepares to drop down to Division 3 in 2023.

West Footscray might have been on the wrong end of results in 2022 but the Roosters are excited about the future.

With relegation to Division 3 of the Western Region league already guaranteed, thanks to a 0-16 record, preparations for the future are already underway.

Last week, the Roosters confirmed the appointment of Troy Beamond as the club’s new senior coach for the next two seasons.

Beamond is no stranger to the competition having guided Wyndhamvale to the Division 2 premiership in 2015 before leading the Falcons in the top tier the following year.

In the premiership winning campaign, Beamond was also named the competition’s Senior Coach of the Year.

He has also spent time with Werribee in the VFL and Springbank in the Central Highlands league.

West Footscray vice-president Phil Rigg said next season would present the club with an opportunity to “reset”.

“Troy’s record speaks for itself,” he said.

“His ability to develop players is one of the key reasons we appointed him. We’ve got junior teams right throughout the age group which means we’ve got a strong base to build off.

“We’re really excited about the calibre of players we’ve got coming through our system.”

The Roosters’ under 18’s side has shown plenty of promise to sit fifth on the ladder after 15 games.

Rigg said many of those players will make the step up to senior footy in 2023.

The core group of this year’s senior team was also expected to stay on board.

“We’ve had a few kids go through our senior team already this year,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on giving on junior players an opportunity to play at the highest level they can. Everything is looking positive at the moment, we haven’t lost anybody yet.

“Even with some new recruits it’s a good chance for us to build from within.”

Beamond is set to replace Ian Fox who has mentored the senior side for the last two seasons.

He is standing down due to work commitments but will remain around the club.

West Footscray will host North Footscray this weekend at Shorten Reserve.
