WRFL: Point Cook Central’s game against Albion called off early

Point Cook Centrals have praised opposition trainers for their support of an injured player which saw the Anzac Day clash against Albion called off early as a star recruit thrived in a “Dusty” like role.

Point Cook Centrals coach Dean Chambers has sung the praises of opposition trainers after they assisted with a serious injury to one of his players.

The WRFL Division 2 Anzac Day game against Albion was called at the 17-minute mark of the third quarter when Max Harris was left concussed.

Chambers said the captains of both sides came together and agreed to stop play with an ambulance called.

The Sharks led 16.7 (78) to 8.6 (54) when the decision to call the game off was made.

“Albion’s trainers were fantastic and helped our young fella until an ambulance arrived,” Chambers said.

“Max is all good now and he was discharged from hospital on Monday night. We’ll give him all the time he needs to get himself right.

“The club couldn’t be more thankful for Albion for the way they handled the situation.”

A strong crowd of about 1000 people attended Featherbrooke Reserve for the Sharks’ clash with one of the “huge improvers” of the competition with gun recruit Mitch Palma taking home the Anzac Medal for the Sharks.

Chambers said he had already had a massive impact on the playing group.

“He’s come in and you can just see the quality he has a player,” he said.

“We’re using him a little bit like Dusty Martin on the ball in terms of him being able to call his moves when he wants to go forward. But we know we can play Mitch across all different parts of the ground.”

Cale Du Plessis also had a big impact in defence as Chambers credited his back six for “holding firm” under serious pressure from Albion.

While up forward, Jordan Bennett and Aaron Williams kicked three goals apiece.

Daniel Strnak, who finished with two majors, and Kurt Mayne were also impressive.

“I thought we had quite an even performance across the field,” Chambers said.

“We had to change a few things at quarter-time and that allowed us to open the game up a bit more.

“Albion play a good brand of footy and gave us another good challenge. We look forward to playing them again later in the year.”
