WRFL: Point Cook Centrals far too good for Wyndhamvale behind Jordan Bennett’s five goals

Point Cook Centrals’ star recruits have the club shaping as one of the teams to beat in WRFL Division 2 as the Sharks created history in a 100-point win over premiership contender Wyndhamvale.

Point Cook Centrals have arrived as a WRFL Division 2 premiership contender.

The Sharks sent an ominous message to the rest of the competition after racing home to a 18.13 (121) to 2.9 (21) win over Wyndhamvale on Saturday.

It was a sign of what Dean Chambers’ side is able to produce at their very best as they maintained their perfect record after beating Glen Orden in the opening round.

The result was also the Sharks first win against the Falcons in the club’s history.

Chambers said he was pleased to come away with the four points after going “into a bit of an unknown”.

“We spoke about the opportunity we had to create our own history before the game,” he said.

“The boys brought a fantastic level of pressure and it helped us to come away with a fantastic win. I thought we were very good defensively and protected ourselves well when Wyndhamvale had the win.

“Wyndhamvale are a very good football team and there’s no doubt they’ll improve as the season goes on.

“We’re pleased to start 2-0 but we know we’ve still got some things we’ve got to work on.”

A nine-goal to nil second term — on the back of a strong breeze — set up the win as a host of recruits made strong impressions.

Jordan Bennett kicked five goals while Aaron Williams booted four.

“Jordy has been fantastic for us as a key forward,” he said.

“He hasn’t played in about four years and he’s fitted in seamlessly to our system and given us a fantastic target inside 50.

“He’s someone who is only going to get better with the more games he plays this season.”

Former Hoppers Crossing pair Mitch Palma and Daniel Strnak were again among the Sharks’ better players with two goals apiece.

Brent Turner, who didn’t play a game in 2021, was named the best player on the ground backing up an impressive start to the season in round one.

Vice-captain Luke Henderson was also impressive.

“The new guys we’ve brought into the club have really helped lift the standards which we wanted to see,” Chambers said.

“They’ve brought the professionalism that you see at Division 1 clubs. Then the guys who were already here have jumped on and are improving themselves as footballers.

“I think we’ve gelled really well as a group.

“Our recruits aren’t here to run second, they’re here to win.”

Chambers said the off-field commitments of the senior group was also paying off with a “buddy system” with junior players strengthening the connections between the age groups.

“We’ll have all 22 senior guys out watching their junior buddy on Sunday which is fantastic,” he said.

The Sharks will make to make it three straight wins in an Anzac Day clash with Albion at home after the Easter break.

“They’re sitting third so it will be a huge game,” Chambers said.

“It would be great if we can get a big crowd on the day.”

Meanwhile, the Falcons will search for their first win of the season against Glen Orden.

Mackenzie Parker was the Falcons best for a second straight week against the Sharks.

Connor Yeoell, Tyler Tessari, Liam Scarborough, Brodie Meadows and Jordan Mould were also named among the best players.
