One key factor stood out in Deer Park’s decision to appoint Heath Scotland as its new senior coach.

His ability to develop young talent.

The former Collingwood and Carlton AFL player was last week appointed as the club’s senior mentor for 2023 replacing Mark McGoldrick who will remain at the club.

Scotland is no stranger to the Western Region league either having stepped down as the coach of Sunshine earlier this year.

He then took on a development role with Port Melbourne in the VFL.

Deer Park president John Nahyna spoke highly of Scotland and what he would bring to the table.

“We’ve got through a lot of change with our playing list, we’re a lot younger than what we were a few years ago — it’s been a real transformation,” he said.

“We felt Heath was best placed to develop the young group that we’ve got. Not only are we wanting them to push themselves to the highest level possible but to be the best footballers they can be.

“That was a key driver in our decision making process and we’re excited for the next step in our transformation as a club.”

While the key pillars are already in place for next year, the Lions still have plenty to play for in 2022.

They currently sit third on the ladder, leading Hoppers Crossing in the race for the double chance.

But Scotland has already ran his eye over the playing group according to Nahyna.

“He’s had a brief exposure to the group but we’re focusing on this year,” he said.

“We’re still in the mix and think we can have a real crack at it. Once the season is over we’ll hit the ground running quickly in terms of pre-season and any recruiting we might be able to do.”

Nahyna was quick to applaud the efforts of McGoldrick throughout the last two years having guided Deer Park through its transitional period.

“We were lucky Mark stepped up and answered the club’s call to coach,” he said.

“The last few years have been volatile for local clubs and we’re no different. He was only ever going to remain in the role until we found the right person to take over.

“I personally can’t thank him enough for what he’s done for us because it hasn’t been easy.”

Deer Park will face Altona and Spotswood in the last two games of the season.
