WRFL Division 3: Laverton beat North Sunshine for first win in 1008 days

Laverton has broken through for its first win in almost three years on a historic night with several new faces continuing to impress in black and white.

Laverton has finally sung its song again after more than 1000 days.

The Magpies broke through for their first senior win since August 8, 2019 after overcoming fellow strugglers North Sunshine 14.8 (92) to 9.14 (68) on Saturday.

It was the first win in 1008 days with the Magpies’ senior women’s team starting the day off with a bang with a big win of their own.

The game also marked the first time Laverton has hosted a night game — made possible by new installed lights which got a trial run during Thursday night’s training session.

A seven-goal to two third term set the victory for the home side after they trailed by 15 points at the main break.

New recruit Matthew Grigg was impressive in his best game for the club after being named the best player on the ground.

Brent Taylor led the way with four goals while Soni Rainbow added three of his own.

Richard Mulroy was the only other multiple goal scorer with two goals.

Travis Barlow, Ryan Dorling and Samson Farley were also named among the better players.

Elsewhere, Albanvale came from behind to secure a thrilling 10.9 (69) to 9.13 (67) win over Sunshine Heights.

Reece Duffield was in sensational form again earning his second straight best on ground nomination.

Dalwinder Mundi, Matt Taylor, Jonathan Miller, Darren Borg and Ostinn Bellingham were also among the Cobras better players.

For Heights, Elliot Rosado, James Vella, Kyall Parker, Oscar Bennett, Junior Eliepa and Will Tsam battled hard.

Meanwhile, Suns came away with a big 17.15 (117) to 5.4 (34) win over Tarneit.

Coach Dean Cachia booted five goals while recruit Lucas Andrew again impressed with a best on ground performance.

Gabriel Ndaisaba, Blake Jago, Kyle Newman and captain Michael Ryan also impressed.

Josh Dunstone battled hard for Tarneit.
