Why Altona chose Travis Varcoe as its new coach

Altona has given an insight into the key factors in its decision to appoint a former AFL star as its new senior coach.

Travis Varcoe is the perfect fit as Altona’s new senior coach according to president Paul Eishold.

The former Geelong and Collingwood star has been appointed to lead the Vikings into the new era after the departure of premiership mentor Corey McCall.

Varcoe spent the 2023 season as a development coach with the Western Bulldogs in the VFL.

Eishold said the deal to bring Varcoe to Altona “all happened pretty quickly” after the two parties met for the first time.

“There’s a bit of a buzz around the place,” he said.

“When we were advertising for the role, we were looking for someone with that VFL or AFL experience and we think Trav’s arrival has hit the nail on the head.

“He’s worked with guys at the highest level and we’ve got a young group, many of who are still finding their way in senior footy.

“We think Trav is the perfect person to help continue developing the group.”

Altona also has several players who played VFL footy this season headlined by Saad El-Hawli who returned late in the season.

And Eishold is confident more players can push on and play in the competition.

“For us, we want to get our guys as much experience and exposure as possible,” he said.

“If Trav is able to help further that progress that Corey had, we’re going to be in a very good place.”

Varcoe has seen Altona first hand after spending last season with Division 1 rivals Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

Altona ended Varcoe’s season in the first semi-final.

“Knowing the competition has its advantages,” Eishold said.

“We’ve just got to trust the system he brings and surround him with the right people.

“When it comes to recruiting, we’re not just looking for quality players but quality people as well.”
