Newport coach Ali Hamad hopes to bring an “exciting brand” to the Western Football Netball League’s top flight this season.

The Panthers are preparing to make their debut in Division 1 after being promoted alongside Albion and Sunshine who played off in the grand final.

“There is massive excitement around at the moment. The boys are really excited for round 1 especially coming out of a full pre-season together,” Hamad said.

“Having practice matches and the anticipation of round 1 just around the corner, the intensity of training has really lifted.”

They haven’t arrived quietly either with Newport making a string of impressive signings including three-time AFL premiership hero Bachar Houli.

Nayef Hamad is another big addition, returning to the club after a one-year stint with East Keilor in the Essendon District league’s Premier Division where he was named in the Team of the Year.

Darcy Cassar has crossed from Keilor while Phillip Moimoi and Lukmain Haddara, a pair with VFL experience, have also bolstered the playing ranks.

Hamad took over the senior coaching role in pre-season.

“It’s been a smooth transition,” he said.

“We went on a team camp to Mt Buller a few weeks ago and did a lot of team connection and bonding activities that’s really helped with the chemistry between players on and off the field.

“Our aim is to have 22 guys on the same page in the seniors and reserves. We want to play an exciting brand of football.

“Because of the recruits we’ve made and now part of the Division 1 competition, We are working to our strengths and understanding roles within the team.

“Darcy Cassar has come across from Keilor, he’s been really impressive at training. He’s got great kicking skills and will be really handy for us.

“It’s going really well so far. I’m not too sure how the other teams look but we’re just focusing on ourselves and wanting to get the best out of ourselves.”

Hamad said pre-season had allowed he and his coaching staff to try different game styles.

“We’re trying guys in different positions, we’re trying different things,” he said.

“We want to have a solution ready for anything that comes up.

“Our under-18s coach, Munir El-Houli, has done a great job with that side.

“He’s created an environment which is really inclusive. We’ve had players and volunteers come across from various clubs and leagues.”
