Werribee Districts beat Point Cook in WRFL Division 1 final

Werribee Districts has its first WRFL senior premiership and we shouldn’t expect the success to slow down. Here’s why.

Werribee Districts has its first senior WRFL Division 1 premiership.

And you shouldn’t expect it to be long between the first and second.

After being the best team all year, Districts romped to a 9.11 (65) to 5.13 (43) win over Point Cook in Sunday’s grand final at Avalon Airport Oval.

The senior flag was the crowning moment for the club who also took home the reserves premiership while the under-18s went down to Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

Without including the club’s junior results this year, it’s easy to see why the former VAFA club should be excited about it’s short and long-term prospects.

After the senior premiership, captain Daniel Schibeci credited the club’s youth for helping the club take the next step after losing last season’s grand final to Altona.

“We’ve got a good group,” he said.

“We’ve got a few over 30s, we’ve got a few mid-20s and we’ve got a few young kids that just take the game on with their dare. They’ve got speed, you need that, because us old boys don’t have that anymore.

“You need the young fellas to come through and they’ve come on leaps and bounds this year. To have three (teams) here three years in a row just shows how much of a stable position we’re in.

“Plenty of years of work, that’s what it feels like. We’ve had this group together for five, six years and added one or two each year.

“And hopefully we can stay there for years to come.”

The outcome could have been very different if Point Cook had of taken its opportunities in the first quarter, kicking 2.6.

Led by experienced head Lee Johnston, Districts withstood the pressure.

“They were fantastic early,” Schibeci said.

“The difference of their (Point Cook’s) game in the first quarter compared to two weeks ago, they obviously learnt a lot from that game and they brought a lot of heat and the pressure was enormous.

“They were probably a little unlucky to not be more up, bad kicking probably let them down.

“The back six was unbelievable. They just held up, held fat, taking air out of the game when they had to.

“They defended like their life depended on it. Can’t fault them one bit.”

Chris Molivas was named awarded the Herb Pascarl Medal as the best player on the ground.

Districts eventually took control of the game in the second quarter with the midfield in particular having a large say in the result.
