The players set to shape WFNL women’s season

The best women’s players are ready to make their mark on the 2025 Western Football Netball League season. Here’s a look on who to keep an eye on.

The Western Football Netball League senior women’s competition is underway.

The first round is underway and early in the season, we’ve taken a look at the key players to watch this season.

Taquila Angel, Parkside

Part of a powerhouse midfield which is hoping to take another step in its growth this season. She’s in the interleague squad.

Meghann Basto, Werribee Centrals

A key back with incredible athleticism and ability to read the play which allows her to win the majority of her 1v1 contests. She also averages close to 10 intercept marks per game and provides elite tackling pressure.

Hayley Bennett, Point Cook Centrals

Plays a key role for the Sharks in the ruck and up forward. Bennett is currently part of the WFNL interleague squad.

Mariah Burton, Wyndhamvale

The joint winner of her club’s best-and-fairest last season. Burton, a former league medal winner, is dominant in the middle of the ground.

Rachael Burton, Wyndhamvale

A former VFLW player who has stepped into the assistant coaching role for this season. Burton can turn a game from the middle of the ground.

Jessica Byrnes, Parkside

The skipper of her side. Byrnes is a standout with her leadership.

Ruby Cashmore, Yarraville Seddon

Emerged as one of the league’s most dominant midfielders last season during her first year with the Eagles. Cashmore’s attack on the footy is a standout trait.

Rita Ceravolo, Parkside

Won her club’s best-and-fairest last season. Brings excellent speed to games. A star midfielder.

Sharnie Currie, Suns

Currently training in the WFNL interleague squad for its clash next month. She is a co-captain this season and won the club’s most determined award last season.

Emma Davis, Point Cook Centrals

The young star has come through the Western Jets program as a junior. Her standout traits include her workrate and ball winning ability.

Amy Duggan, North Sunshine

The skipper of her side who has returned after winning the 2024 best-and-fairest.

Emily Evans, Suns

Evans is one of the most consistent performers for the Suns who will be right in the mix for a premiership this year.

Ruby Cashmore, Yarraville Seddon

Entering her sixth season as her club’s skipper. Gannon is consistently among the better players for her side.

Emily Gillespie, West Footscray

The Roosters reigning best-and-fairest winner is sharp around goal and causes plenty of headaches for her opponents. She is in the WFNL interleague squad.

Madeline Johnson, Suns

Won her side’s best-and-fairest last season as she emerged one of the best midfielders in the competition. Often is tagged by opposition coaches.

Kyleisha Kinces, Werribee Centrals

A quick and powerful midfielder who bursts through packs and applies both offensive and defensive pressure to all contests with smart and efficient decision making abilities.

Jacinta Kondis, Caroline Springs

The young star is one of the leading forwards in the competition and looms as one of the key names to watch in this year’s race for the league goalkicking award.

Maggie Logan, Yarraville Seddon

Logan took out her club’s most improved award last season and she’s now earned a place in the WFNL interleague squad.

Julia Nash, Werribee Centrals

An agile and versatile ruck with an innate talent for roving her own taps and applying pressure all around the ground.

Caitlin Pretty, Caroline Springs

A Team of the Year forward in 2024. The skipper finished last season with 34 goals.

Chloe Prior, Wyndhamvale

A key figure in her side’s hopes this season. Prior was the joint best-and-fairest winner at the Falcons and was named in the Team of the Year.

Larissa Renaut, Werribee Centrals

Last season’s competition leading goalkicker has started in fine form with seven goals on the opening weekend.

Rosie Ronan-Yates, Yarraville Seddon

Made the Team of the Year last season during her first year at the club. She’s a high IQ midfielder who can go forward and kick goals.

Janelle Sammut, West Footscray

A new signing this season. The former A-League soccer official made an instant mark on debut as she kicked seven goals in the win over North Sunshine.

Nyomi Stowers, Caroline Springs

Comes into the season as one of the leading performers in the competition last year. Stowers was named in the Team of the Season and has already been named in the best in round 1.

Page Tyrrell, Point Cook Centrals

A strong target inside 50 for the Sharks. She’s a very accurate kick for goal.

Kelly Wade, North Sunshine

Able to play at both ends of the ground and can cleverly find teammates with her silky left boot.
