Member for Tarneit Dylan Wight turns out for local footy club

When a local footy club in Melbourne’s west put out a call for more players, they probably weren’t expecting Spring St to provide the unlikeliest match winning hero. See the vision.

You might struggle to find a more unlikely match winner during the 2024 local footy season.

State politician Dylan Wight booted two goals, including the winner, when he turned out for Tarneit in the Western Football Netball League on Saturday.

The Member for Tarneit answered the Titans’ call out for players to help field a reserves team against North Sunshine.

But not even Wight could probably imagine the impact he had.

“I was lucky to get on the end of a couple, it was a fantastic experience,” he said.

“I enjoyed the camaraderie and being able to help the Titans out, they’re struggling for numbers at the moment but pulling on the boots is probably the least I can do to help.

“I’ve played my whole life, probably not as much as I would have liked in the last couple of years due to work, and being 34 I’m starting to feel it a lot more when I do play.

“In speaking to the club, there were discussions about potentially getting involved and I was glad to get out there and have a win.

“Participation is one of the biggest challenges for clubs and these are great environments for people to stay fit and active.”

Wight said it wasn’t clear whether he would pull on the long sleeved number six jumper again this season but was keen to help his clubs where possible.

He sponsors every club in his electorate and stressed the importance of community sport.

“I’ve grown up in community sporting clubs, mainly footy, but every code is fantastic,” he said.

“They’re run by some absolute legends who give up a lot of their own free time. I’d encourage anyone who is looking to get involved in sport to try a community club.”

Tarneit prevailed 4.5 (29) to 4.4 (28) in a hard fought contest.

The Titans made it a perfect day with a strong victory in the senior game.
