Local footy: Yarraville-Seddon could lose Andrejs Everitt to Park Orchards

Former AFL player Andrejs Everitt is looking to depart Yarraville-Seddon in what would be a hammer blow to the club’s hopes of a successful season in Western Region Football League Division 1.

Everitt was one of the Eagles star performers in 2019 as they finally earned promotion to the top flight after three consecutive grand final defeats.

The 31-year-old bagged 40 goals from 16 games, including a haul of three in the Division 2 decider against Wyndhamvale.

Yarraville-Seddon last November announced Everitt had re-signed for 2021 and would “continue his assistant coaching and mentoring role with our players”.

But in a shock development, Everitt is hoping to join Eastern league side Park Orchards, which is coached by his former Carlton teammate Dennis Armfield.

The first clearance request was denied last Wednesday, while a second was submitted on Sunday.

Asked about the transfer tangle, new Yarraville-Seddon coach Brad Julier said: “That one is still up in the air at the moment.

“He is a required, contracted player we want at Yarraville.”

WRFL great Julier took over as the Eagles coach in January, less than a month after ex-AFL midfielder Michael Barlow accepted the top job at VFL outfit Werribee without leading the club in an official match.

While Barlow is still hoping to take the field for Yarraville-Seddon at some stage this season if his coaching commitments allow, losing two experienced players could leave it exposed against the competition’s elite sides.

Armfield, who played three seasons with Everitt at Carlton, said it was a “wait and see” prospect.

He said his club would respect Yarraville-Seddon and its position, along with the existing player movement processes in place, adding it was important that “all parties are happy” with the outcome.

The Sharks lost former Carlton big man Daniel Gorringe to AFL Outer East club Wandin in 2019, alongside premiership key forward Michael Fowkes.

Everitt would be a major acquisition for the EFL Division 1 side after notching 131 games for Western Bulldogs, Sydney and Carlton in a 10-year AFL career.

He also spent two seasons coaching Somerville in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean league.

Players can submit a clearance request three times.

Clubs are then directed to resolve the issue, while disputes can also be settled by AFL Victoria as a final step.
