Local footy: Trent Lee boots 10 for Werribee Districts in WRFL win over Point Cook

A Werribee Districts small forward produced a “complete game” in his biggest haul in the WRFL while coach Chris Gilham had strong praise for Point Cook despite a lopsided result.

Werribee Districts star Trent Lee is one of the most in-form players in the WRFL.

The small forward lit up Keogh Homes Oval on Saturday afternoon as he booted 10 goals — his first double figure haul in the competition — to lead his side to a big 26.16 (172) to 6.5 (41) win over Point Cook.

Lee now has 15 goals in his last two outings and sits equal fourth in the competition’s goalkicking charts.

Districts coach Chris Gilham said Lee and his fellow forwards including Daniel Nielson, who kicked six majors, were the beneficiaries of some “really selfless footy”.

“It was a complete game from Trent and it doesn’t get much better than that from a small forward,” he said.

“We were able to generate a lot of inside 50s and it was really good our guys were able to convert those into a big score.

“Trent’s goals came from a variety of different sources including crumbs off packs and leading up the ground. He found himself in everything.”

The win was Werribee’s fourth in a row as they moved up into fourth position on the ladder, one game behind Hoppers Crossing as the race for the double chance heats up in the back half of the season.

Despite close losses early in the season which saw them start 2-4, Gilham said his team was beginning to build nicely after a week off.

Ruckman Ben McMahon, Dillon Viojo-Rainbow and Connor Thar all played an important role.

“It’s promising to kick off the second half of the season with a big win,” he said.

“In some of the games against Hoppers and Deer Park we were in front in the last quarter but unfortunately went down. The beauty of a 10-team competition is that you get to play those sides again and rectify that.

“We got a couple of players back yesterday including Thar and we’ve still got a few to come back in. We played a lot of younger guys earlier in the season and they showed we’ve got good signs not just this year but for the long-term future as well.

“Our goal is to play finals this year whereas Point Cook are a developing team who have a lot of kids in their line-up.

“They’re going to be a very strong team in future and we’re looking forward to those battles.”

Nicholas Buykx was named best on ground for Point Cook for the third straight game while Heath Schiavello and Connor Brown battled hard.

Districts will face a huge test of their finals credentials next weekend when they travel to take on Altona.

Meanwhile, Point Cook will host Hoppers Crossing.
