WRFL Division 3: Wyndham Suns coach Dean Cachia reppointed for 2021

One suburban football club has declared its coach will keep hold of the top job “until he decides he doesn’t want to do it” in an incredible show of faith. Here’s why.

Wyndham Suns have locked in coach Dean Cachia for 2021.

But if the Western Region Football club has its way, the union will last much longer.

The Suns appointed Darren O’Flaherty to the top job in November 2018 and lost him soon after, with Cachia stepping up to fill the vacancy.

He booted 55 goals in his first season as a playing coach as his team finished in fifth position on the Division 3 ladder.

“It will definitely be longer,” Suns president Graeme Clark said of Cachia’s tenure.

“It’s his role until he decides he doesn’t want to do it.

“He’s stuck by us when we’ve had hard times and we’re 150 per cent committed to him.”

While the 2020 campaign was canned amid the coronavirus crisis, Clark said the Suns had put themselves in a good position.

The club contested back-to-back finals series before slipping outside the top four last year.

Former Manor Lakes quartet Riley Buckley, Michael Jubb, Brandon Donald and Adam Mosciatello had re-signed after making the switch when the Storm withdrew from the WRFL’s senior ranks last June.

“For us, they were pretty major because they were only there for a short period the year before,” Clark said.

“They were very happy to stay around and help the club grow.

“We were flying under the radar a little bit.

“Obviously everyone was talking about Albanvale, Braybrook and Tarneit. We were just sitting there thinking, ‘That’s great, we can just go out and do what we’ve got to do’.”

The Suns boast plenty of talent in their senior squad, headlined by 2019 best and fairest Jarrod Vella, Michael Ryan, Paul Tomelty and Cachia.

Clark said the club’s players were “devastated” the season could not go ahead but was confident it would climb the ladder in 2021.

“They were looking really sharp, very positive and training the house down to some extent,” he said.

“We see ourselves as a club that people want to come to now.

“Obviously the aspiration is to get to Division 2 as quickly as possible and, when the time’s right and we’ve got all the relevant programs in place, then Division 1 is the end goal.”
