BRAYBROOK coach Jason Hamilton has forecast some arduous sessions for his players over summer as the Western Region Football League club targets a premiership in 2019.

The Brookers finished fourth on the ladder in Hamilton’s first season at the helm and were eliminated by Wyndham Suns in the opening week of finals.

But Hamilton has declared his group must get fitter to match it with the elite in Division 3.

“This year it’s going to be a different pre-season,” he said.

“We’re going to get ourselves really fit and the boys are super keen.

“We need to get fitter to play the game style we want to play and the game style to match it with the top-three teams from this season.

“We’re going to be a lot tougher (next year). We’ve been there for a year now, the honeymoon period is over and now it’s time to rock ‘n’ roll.”

While Braybrook was a much-improved side this year after a seventh-placed finish the previous season, Hamilton said the club needed to recruit “three or four more players”.

Best and fairest Nick Gregson, Nathan Calleja, Dean Galea, Petar Pavlovic, Nathan Smith and Paul Cutajar-Milosev, who kicked 70 goals this season, have recommitted.

“We’re not pulling any punches. We definitely want to improve from this year and we’re going for the flag next year hopefully,” Hamilton said.

The coach gave his side’s campaign a big tick after it won 10 of 19 games.

“We were pretty confident going in to the final, but Wyndham Suns got a lot of their blokes back and played a good brand of football,” Hamilton said.

“They were just a bit too good for us on the day, but we learnt a hell of a lot.

“But it was a massive tick for the whole year. It wasn’t just on the field, it was our discipline off the field and all that.

“We were really happy with the efforts of the boys.”
