He had beer spilled on him and people ruffling his hair.
Aaron Mullett said the mayhem that followed his 100th goal for Wandin on Saturday was just perfect.
“It was a special day, it really was,’’ he said.
“I couldn’t be happier.’’
With a brilliant snap on the run, 33-year-old Mullett brought up his maiden ton.
The former North Melbourne and Carlton player achieved his maiden century 20 minutes into the Bulldogs’ top-of-the-ladder clash with Olinda Ferny Creek at Clegg Rd.
Mullett went into the game on 98 goals and slotted his first (a set shot) at the nine-minute mark after a pass from Pat Hodgett.
Then came the big moment; scooping up an errant handball, he evaded two opponents and finished brilliantly on his trusty left boot.
Mullett raised his right arm, then both — and charged. Wandin co-captains Patty Bruzzese and Cody Hirst couldn’t catch him, his celebration dash ending in the arms of Wandin’s other ex-AFL man, Joel Garner.
“I definitely wanted to get it out of the way,’’ he said.
“The lead up during the week was pretty special, and I felt a lot of love from a lot of people.’’
It sparked exultant scenes as 100 fans rushed on to the ground to celebrate with him.
Mullett was ecstatic, hugging and high fiving anyone in his path.
“It happened all pretty quick,’’ he said.
“I got beer spilled all over me and people were rubbing my hair. I just had my head down and I just tried to enjoy the moment — and it was great, I saw some people that have been there throughout my whole footy career so it was cool to spend it with them and share the moment.
“All my close mates, a few from high school were there, all my family were there, I had workmates there, physios who I’ve used over the years.’’
Wandin coach Nick Adam said it was a moment to cherish.
“We wanted this to be a special moment not only for him but for all those who have supported and followed his footy career,’’ he said.
“It’s obviously a pretty special day for the club.
“He is three years in with us and he’s really connected to the football netball club…a lot of people who wear our colours were really proud to share in his moment.’’
Mullett finished with five goals for the afternoon as Wandin overpowered Olinda Ferny Creek 10.12 (72) to 6.8 (44).
Mullett has kicked 103 goals this season in 13 games, at an average of 7.92.
His game-by-game tally reads: 9, 7, 10, 12, 6, 7, 12, 6, 6, 8, 5, 10, 5.
Wandin (13-1) sits two games clear on top of the OEFN Premier Division ladder, with four games to go.
There’s speculation Mullett will miss a game or two as he’s put in cotton wool to be cherry ripe for the finals, with the Bulldogs looking to go one better after losing last season’s grand final to Narre Warren.
On Saturday, Brodie Atkins was best-afield for the Bulldogs, with Chayce Black, Cody Hirst, Ben Johnson, Charlie Wood and the returning Daniel Willis also among the best.
Wandin’s rooms were heaving after the game as the club also celebrated 20 years of netball, and ladies day.
