SHE’S arguably the Frankston Bombers’ biggest celebrity recruit since Dermott Brereton, but The Bachelor winner Alex Nation is just another player according to her coach.
The Bombers’ new women’s team kicked off in style last week, thumping Morwell East 24.26 (170) to 0.1 (1).
Nation’s appearance in the red and black drew a big crowd, and she didn’t let them down, getting her share of kicks and even booting a goal in a more-than-handy debut effort.
Bombers coach Brett White admitted he didn’t know who she was until she joined the team on the eve of the season.
“She came to me last week and said, ‘I want to play footy’,” White said.
“Someone came up to me and said, ‘you know she won The Bachelor’. I said, ‘oh, did she?’ She just came to play footy.
“She’s got a big following, there was a big crowd.”
White said Nation showed plenty of promise in her first outing.
“She’s picked it up quickly, she’s a quick learner. But she’s athletic,” he said.
“She loved it, couldn’t get enough of it. I was going to take her off in the last quarter and I sent the runner out but she wasn’t coming off for love nor money.”
The Bombers were sitting on top of the SEWF South East Development ladder with an eye-popping percentage of 1700.
White said his side has a vast range of ages, from teenagers to 40-year-olds, and the mums in the side bring their kids along. “It’s a great family atmosphere,” he said.
“Some of my better footballers had never picked up a football until this year.”
Cerberus/Crib Point, Tyabb and Pearcedale also had impressive first up wins. Games are played on Sunday afternoons.
