BREANN Moody grew up next to a sporting champion – and now she will have her own shot at stardom.
Moody adored the brilliant racehorse Black Caviar, trained by her father Peter.
And now, just as “Nelly’’ did, Moody will have her chance to shine at the top level after being drafted by Carlton in the historic first AFL Women’s draft.
Moody has emerged as an exciting talent while playing with Cranbourne in the Women’s VFL.
She was one of seven Cranbourne players snapped up in the draft.
“I said going in we would get six or seven, so I’m happy with seven,” Cranbourne coach Kris Smith said.
Of the Cranny crew, Bianca Jakobsson went early — to Carlton with pick 3.
“To go first pick in Victoria, that’s massive,” Smith said.
“She does the work and she deserves it.”
Cranbourne’s draftees were: Bianca Jakobsson (Carlton at pick 3), Kirsten McLeod (Western Bulldogs, 28), Danielle Hardiman (Carlton, 35), Hayley Wildes (Western Bulldogs, 44), Breann Moody (Carlton, 67), Courtney Clarkson (Western Bulldogs,124), Jasmine Grierson (Melbourne, 135).
Clarkson was on her way to Vietnam for a holiday when her name was called out.
Smith said she will be over the moon.
“Courtney played for Berwick a few years back. She came to me and said , ‘Smithy, I want to get drafted’. I said, ‘I’ll do my bit, you just got to do yours’,” Smith said.
“We worked around the hours she worked because she’s a police officer … I pushed her as far … it’s nice to get a result.”
