Old Xaverians responded to doubters with a massive win over Old Trinity in their Premier clash at Toorak Park on Saturday.
With Xavs seemingly slowing down in recent weeks, an 18.16 (124) to 2.4 (16) win over the Ts suggests the punishing brand of footy they’ve shown this season is still very much alive.
Old Trinity is now dangling over a precipice with relegation still on the cards if it fails to maintain its narrow lead over the improving De La Salle.
Old Xaverians coach Paul Satterley praised his team’s miserly effort on Saturday.
“To keep any side to two goals for a whole game is reflective of a pretty stingy team in terms of not wanting to give up anything,” he said..
“We probably had better quality of inside 50s than we’ve had for a good month I’d say. We haven’t been in good nick.

“I think yesterday, it all started to come together and I think just a good start for where we want to build from here.
“We know we’re going to play finals now, so we need to be playing a brand that’s going to hold up.”
The Xavs maintained their defensive intensity for the full length of the game, with the likes of Marcus Stavrou and Fraser Pearce shutting down any Old Trinity attacking efforts.
“What we found yesterday was collectively, there was defensive acts going on all around the ground so I think when that’s happening it’s a bit easier for our defenders to all sort of get themselves organised and defend,” Satterley said.
“We’ve just got to get ourselves organised in terms of how we want to play and lead into the finals in some really good form.”
Harry Tinney racked up 24 touches for the Ts on Saturday and may be one of the deciding factors in Old Trinity’s hopes of staying afloat over the next two weeks.
Also in Premier, De La Salle overpowered Old Carey, 13.20 (98) to 12.5 (77), to maintain its hopes of avoiding relegation.
In Premier B, Old Geelong fell to the Parkdale Vultures 16.12 (108) to 11.15 (81) at Gerry Green Reserve while in Division 1, Prahran Assumption suffered a heavy loss at the hands of a spirited Oakleigh outfit 21.17 (143) to 8.8 (56) at WA Scamell Reserve.
And in Division 2 Melbourne High School Old Boys had the bye.
