As the dust settled on the Premier B home-and-away season, Old Carey secured second spot on the ladder with an emphatic 63-point win over Monash Blues on Saturday.

Needing only a win to secure the double-chance, the Panthers stepped up a gear and, on the back of 17 goals to seven after quarter time, ran away with an easy 21.13 (139) to 11.10 (76) victory.

Approaching the Premier B finals series on the back of eight straight wins, Old Carey coach Michael Tarrant was pleased with not only the finish to the home-and-away season but the performance of the club as a whole.

“The guys did a good job today and it was a nice way to finish off what has been a strong season for the entire club,” he said.

“We have had a really positive home and away year.

“Our under-19s finished second on the ladder, our reserves and thirds made the finals and the senior team have finished second.

“So, overall, it’s been a great year for the club.

“We have a big job in front of us but we have given ourselves the chance, which is what we wanted to do”.

Best for Old Carey included Kristian Jaksch, who snagged four goals, and 100-gamer Cam Wallace who was best on ground.

In what’s shaping as an exciting finals series, the Panthers will take on the all-conquering St Bernard’s in the second semi-final, while Uni Blacks battle Caulfield Grammarians in the first semi-final.

“St Bernard’s are a 70 per cent better side than us when you look at the percentage and we understand that, but we need to focus on what we do,” he said.

“They have got some good players no doubt and they will play well anyway but we can’t go in trying to stop 10 players, we will focus on ourselves and our game.

“We need full team effort and for us that’s the way forward, we need everybody playing a role.”

Meanwhile, in Premier, Old Trinity secured fourth spot on the ladder and will go into the finals series full of confidence after defeating Collegians 13.11 (89) to 10.11 (71).

In Premier C, Marcellin ended the home-and-away season in fifth place, after a 20.9 (129) to 11.11 (77) win over Old Ivanhoe.
