The Victorian Amateur Football Association’s women’s rep side did the Big White V proud when it demolished the AFL Goldfields in a lopsided affair at Elsternwick Park on Saturday.
In just its third interleague clash, the VAFA was looking to repeat last year’s win over AFL Goldfields when it scored a 49-point win in North Ballarat.
Any doubts about the VAFA continuing that winning streak where silenced in the early minutes as the Ammos piled on eight opening-quarter goals while holding the visitors scoreless.
The Big White V’s lightning ball movement was irresistible and, while the VAFA added to its own tally at will, the visitors’ digits on the Elsternwick scoreboard remained unmoved until the final siren greeted a 22.19 (151) to 0.0 (0) win.
“The way they moved the ball was exceptional,” rep coach Tom Stafford said. “We’ve only been together four weeks and sometimes in these rep games it’s hard to come together and gel. But I’m really impressed with how they stuck to the structures we had in place. The girls were great, they have a lot more footy nous these days.”

SAINTS LOVE THEIR MOTHER AND SON
St Mary’s Salesian’s Stephanie Lawrence and SKOBs Saints’ Sarah Cameron led the way with four goals apiece while West Brunswick’s Grace MacPherson, Marcellin’s Shaylee Taylor and Scotch Stars’ Anna Hayes all chipped in with two.
Though he lauded the efforts of the “24 superstars out there today”, Stafford singled out the leadership of skipper Vanessa Murphy (Old Trinity) in the midfield and the drive supplied by Teresa Zampaglione (Fitzroy-ACU) from the wing.
Stafford said representative football continued to have great support throughout the association.
“The VAFA has dominated in representative footy for quite a while because the players want to buy in and wear the Big White V,” he said. “It’s a special jumper isn’t it?
“It's good for local clubs as well. When we started with the initial squad of 55 the plan was players would go back to their clubs better players.”
Meanwhile, in the earlier game at Elsternwick on Saturday, the VAFA under-19s had a 17.15 (117) to 11.13 (79) win over AFL Vic Country.
The VAFA, kicking into the breeze, trailed by two points at quarter time but dominated the contest from that point on.
De La Salle’s Aaron Trusler kicked four goals while Geordie Nagle (De La Salle), Cam Hodges (St Kevin’s), Bailey Wraith (Old Carey), Lachlan Farrugia (St Kevin’s) and Hamish Dick (Old Brighton) all played a big part in the Ammos’ win.
