The Victorian Amateur Football Association’s women’s ranks are setting themselves for the biggest day of the year with a bumper Sunday of premiership-deciders this weekend.
On Sunday, it was the last roll of the dice for premiership hopefuls with preliminary finals sending winners into the biggest game of the year while ending the dreams of the vanquished.

SHEAGLES TO FACE MELBOURNE UNI IN DECIDER
Marcellin will look to successfully defend its win in last season’s inaugural grand final when it takes on Melbourne University at Elsternwick Park on Sunday.
Melbourne Uni won its way through to the big one with a gritty win over Kew, 3.8 (26) to 2.6 (18), in difficult conditions at Williamstown’s Burbank Oval on Sunday.
After keeping Kew goalless in the first half, Melbourne University had a handy edge at the half before Kew went up a gear and snatched the lead by the final change of ends.
But Melbourne Uni held Kew scoreless in the final quarter, while kicking two goals itself, to secure passage to grand final day.

SAINTS V WEST BRUNSWICK FOR THE FLAG
St Mary’s Salesian scored a comfortable win over the Monash Blues at Elsternwick Park on Sunday to set up a grand final showdown with West Brunswick at Marcellin College this week.
The Saints edged ahead early and always had their noses in front before saluting, 4.9 (33) to 1.4 (10).
On a tough afternoon for scoring, Kayla May Smith was the only multiple goalscorer for the day, kicking two goals for St Mary’s Salesian, while Madeleine Stanley was named best-afield.
Arielle Cathcart kicked the Blues’ only goal while Grace Mills and Mimi Arnott did their best to get Monash over the line.

OLD HAILEYBURY EDGES CLEAR IN SECOND HALF
Old Haileybury held its nerve to pip an inaccurate Beaumaris at the post, 2.3 (15) to 1.7 (13), in the Premier B (White) preliminary final at the Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham on Sunday, booking a grand final appointment with Old Scotch at the same venue this weekend.
Old Haileybury trailed by four points at halftime before holding the Sharks to a solitary behind in the second half while kicking a goal itself to put its nose in front at the final siren.
Frances Land and Pulomaja Gardiyawasam kicked Old Haileybury’s goals while Sarah Casey was best afield. Ashleigh Harvie was the Sharks’ best and kicked their only goal.

IVIES BLOOM WHEN IT COUNTS
Ivanhoe is through to the VAFA Division 1 women’s grand final after an 11-point preliminary final win over St Bedes-Mentone Tigers at Elsternwick Park on Sunday.
The Ivies led throughout in a low-scoring affair on the big ground at VAFA headquarters before winning 4.4 (28) to 2.5 (17).
The victory sets up a grand final rendezvous with nemesis Hawthorn at Elsternwick Park on Sunday (9.30am).
Both teams will be promoted to Premier B (White) next season.
Ivies coach Bill Emerson said he was proud of the way his team had responded after the semi-final loss to Hawthorn last week.
“The whole club should be proud for what they have achieved, but there’s still a long way to go,” he said. “The big dance is still to come, but you can’t dance if you are not at the party.”

A wayward Whitefriars mastered the difficult conditions at Williamstown’s Burbank Oval, and opposition from Old Ivanhoe, to win a low scoring preliminary final on Sunday.
Just two goals were scored for the day before the Friars saluted 1.12 (18) to 1.1 (7) to earn a grand final showdown with Old Melburnians at Trevor Barker Oval this week.
Kate Tull kicked Whitefriars goal while Jacqueline Mitchelhill threaded the big sticks for Old Ivanhoe.

On what proved to be a difficult day for scoring, Westbourne Grammarians managed the highest score for the afternoon when it logged a 7.11 (53) to 2.5 (17) win over Melbourne Cricket Club at Trevor Barker Oval.
Westbourne Grammarians opened a 16-point lead by quarter-time and managed to hold sway for the rest of the day to book a place in the grand final against the Preston Bullants this weekend.
Brianna Herman and Lauren Spark kicked two-apiece for Westbourne, Rennae Robinson earning the nod as best on ground.
