Victoria out to win at home but face stern competition from other states

Victoria will field four teams, in girls and boys, at the upcoming national 15 and under school sport titles to be held in Ballarat next week. We profile all students set to compete for national glory.

AFL value picks, FIFA Women's World Cup tips + NRL & F1 best bets!

There is only one goal for Victoria’s 15 years and under football teams as they prepare to host the School Sport nationals at home.

Be the best again.

Ballarat will play host to the tournament, which starts on Sunday and ends next Saturday.

Victoria enters the tournament, in both boys and girls, for the first time in a while without being the defending champions.

The girls team finished fourth in Albury last year, failing to make the final and losing to South Australia in the battle for third and fourth.

Queensland claimed the title.

In the boys, Victoria lost for the first time in the final in six years, falling to rivals South Australia by 15 points.

This year both boys and girls have been split into two teams, Blue and White, with both evenly matched teams looking to take out the crown.

Victoria Blue, in the boys, will play against South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania in their pool with Victoria White to play Queensland, Western Australia and ACT.

For Blue, their coach Sean Kavanagh said the team was intent on playing well at home.

“We’re not feeling the pressure as we don’t hold the championship,” he said.

“We get to be the hunter for the change.

“We won six championships in a row and then South Australia won it last year, and to their credit they were fantastic.

“We know we had to go back and work harder and plan harder and hopefully there is zero pressure on our guys because we are coming after what we want to get, some silverware at the end of the week.”

Kavanagh said the team motto is to ‘how do we make each other better.’

The team starts its campaign against South Australia and admits the first game will be decisive in how the team goes.

“Round 1 being against SA could determine who finishes one and two in our pool before the crossover games,” Kavanagh said.

“It’s really exciting and for both states it will set up their week, regardless of the results.”

Kavanagh said the team have been able to prepare well through the help of Caulfield Grammar and Yarra Valley Grammar and their facilities.

The White team, which features more country players, with a mix of metro players, will be looking to impress in conditions which suit them.

The team features Ballarat and St Patrick’s College players Oliver Cape and Tethloach Liem.

“An ideal scenario would be a Victoria White and Victoria Blue grand final,” Victoria White coach Aron Lombardi said.

“We definitely want to make the top four, and play off in the semi-final.

“We just want to make sure we play strong as a team and make Victoria proud.”

Lombardi said Queensland would be pretty strong in their group with tradition powerhouse Western Australia expected to challenge.

In the girls, both will be represented by a White and Blue team.

The Blue team will play Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania while the White team faces South Australia, New South Wales and ACT.

Blue coach Andrew Fisher said the team is capable of a good tournament but did face a tough test early on.

“Our first hurdle is going to be playing the championship winner from last year Queensland,” he said.

“It’s a pretty talented squad.

“We’ve got a pretty good balance.”

For the White team, their coach Jason Patten said the team will not only be playing to win but using the tournament as one for their development for the future.

With most of the squad excelling in the midfield, some will be put into roles they are not used to.

“We can’t play 20 midfielders in midfield roles, it doesn’t work,” he said.

“So from a development opportunity it is going to be a good opportunity for the girls to play different roles they are not used to.

“There will be coaching from the sideline and they will get feedback.”

But Patten said the team is eager to win, especially at home, but the girls would need to play well to progress against what could be strong opposition this week.

The tournament starts on Sunday with an opening ceremony to be held on Saturday.
