“Moose’’ will be on the loose at North Port Oval next year.
Former Gippsland Power and NEAFL utility Matt McGannon will line up with Port Melbourne after signing with the VFL mainstay last night.
McGannon, 20, is coming off a premiership season with Morningside in what was an eventful 2020 for him.
He started it with Redland, returned to Victoria and signed with Casey Demons when the NEAFL season fell over, then made his way back to Queensland when the VFL season was scrapped.
Linking with Morningside, he helped it to a nine-point victory over Broadbeach in the grand final.
McGannon, nicknamed “Moose’’ as he grew up in South Gippsland, was spoken about as an AFL prospect when he played at Gippsland Power.
A running defender/wingman, he was named in the TAC Cup team of the year and attended the AFL draft state combine.
Overlooked at the end of the 2018 season, he joined Redland.
McGannon is from Fish Creek, where he played in a senior premiership at the age of 16.
His father, Barry, played at Sandringham and his brother, Ryan, has linked with Frankston for 2021.
Port Melbourne has also signed McGannon’s former Gippsland Power teammate and 2018 Under 18 All Australian Kyle Reid, a key defender.
Reid, who hails from Leongatha Parrots, linked with Casey Demons for the 2020 season that never kicked off.
He was with Geelong VFL in 2019.
The Borough have another strong South Gippsland connection through their development coach Trent McMicking, a premiership player and assistant coach at Tarwin.
Port has so far announced confirmed the signings of former Carlton forward Patrick Kerr, ex-North Melbourne listed tall Declan Watson and Essendon VFL midfielder Liam McKenna.
