Bounce the ball: the 2022 VFLW season kicks off with six matches this weekend

Clubs have named their squads for the 2022 VFLW season that kicks off with six matches this weekend, including a stand-alone battle between Darebin and Williamstown.

It’s been a while since a triumphant team lifted the VFLW premiership cup.

The 2020 season never got off the ground.

The 2021 season got down to the last two teams but was abandoned before Collingwood and Geelong could play in the grand final, Covid again the spoiler.

Hopefully it’s a case of third time lucky for the VFLW, which kicks off on Saturday with the first round of a 14-round home-and-away series.

Twelve teams are lining up and the top six will contest a four-week finals series.

The grand final is scheduled for the weekend of July 2-3.

There are two byes in the fixture – after Round 5 (March 19-20) and Round 8 (April 16-17). There will also be a pre-finals bye on June 4-5.

For a second season the league will be named the rebel VFLW, with the Australian brand and leading sports retailer continuing its support of the women’s state league.

AFL general manager of women’s football Nicole Livingstone said: “The rebel VFLW competition provides some of the best players in Victoria and the country with the opportunity to play at the highest standard of state league football.

“2022 is such an important year for the game in Victoria after what the state has been through in the past two years, so we are looking forward to a full season of great football and for the VFLW to continue to flourish.

“The competition has made great headway but we can’t take for granted the importance of rebounding strongly this year.

“The recently released AFL Women’s Football Vision reflects our absolute commitment to building and progressing Australian Football at every level of the game for women and girls. VFLW is a significant part of that commitment and we want the competition to be as strong as it can be, while providing opportunities for hundreds of players to play our great game at a very high level.”

AFL state league competitions manager Jennie Loughnan said: “After a huge amount of planning and preparation, all clubs are ready for a big year.

“The past two years have been very difficult for many with so much disruption, but the resilience and determination we’ve seen from clubs, players, umpires, partners and all stakeholders involved in the rebel VFLW competition shows how much it means to people. There is a lot of excitement about the year ahead.

“The competition is an important part of the pathway system, with many players progressing from the NAB League and aspiring to reach the elite AFLW level. Having VFLW clubs aligned to AFLW programs ensures a strong connection to the elite level.

“We thank all stakeholders, including the clubs and the players, for their co-operation as we’ve planned for the season and developed the fixture. We may face the need to adapt our fixture because of Covid forcing changes at AFLW level. We will continue to work closely with clubs and we are absolutely committed to completing a full season in 2022.

“The support of rebel and our commercial partners is critical in ensuring the ongoing growth and success of the VFLW competition, and we are grateful for their commitment to women’s football.”

With the grand final unable to be played, Collingwood was recognised as the minor premier for 2021 after its undefeated season.

With the 2020 season cancelled, the last VFLW premiership was won by the Magpies in 2019.

The rebel VFLW competition will run alongside the NAB AFLW season and NAB League Girls, which both started in January.

Entry to all rebel VFLW matches is free.

Of the 12 VFLW clubs, 10 are aligned to AFL/W clubs – Carlton, Casey Demons (Melbourne), Collingwood, Essendon, Geelong, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Port Melbourne (Richmond), Southern Saints (St Kilda) and Western Bulldogs.

Darebin and Williamstown field stand-alone VFLW teams.
