VFL: Son of ex-AFL Saint Stephen Milne sizzles for Frankston Dolphins

The son of a gun sizzled as Frankston unveiled more exciting talent in a practice match ahead of the 2024 VFL season.

New Frankston coach Jackson Kornberg lamented his side’s bad kicking for goal after the Dolphins went down to Northern Bullants by three points in a VFL practice match on Saturday.

“Disappointed not to get the win but when you kick 6.17 you don’t deserve to win,” Kornberg said.

But Kornberg said the hit out at the Victorian-based VFL standalone clubs triple header at Frankston’s Kinetic Stadium was another key stepping stone towards the 2024 season.

He was particularly impressed with defender Max Williams and Sandringham recruit Tyson Milne, son of former St Kilda star goalkicker Stephen.

“He got back to what we saw at Sandy the last couple of years,’’ Kornberg said of Milne.

“His run and carry and composure with the ball was excellent.”

Of Williams, Kornberg said: “I thought Max Williams was pretty solid down back...he played a fair bit of game time and he was that deep defender.’’

Former AFL players Tom Murphy and Jack Newnes had their first hit outs in the pre season for Frankston, as did the impressive Jackson Voss.

Kornberg said the Dolphins were getting closer to figuring out their best line-up to take into the season.

“It was good to see roughly what the team will look like come round one,” he said.

“We were five goals to one down at quarter time and we settled after that the boys responded pretty well. Disappointing with the result but lots of positives out of it.”

Williamstown edged Port Melbourne by five points, 7.7 (49) to 6.8 (44), in the first practice match.

Jay Dahlhaus slotted three goals in Werribee’s 40 point win over Coburg, 13.6 (84) to 6.8 (44), in the third practice match. Former Geelong midfielder Cooper Whyte impressed in his first game in black and gold and Riley Bice had plenty of the ball off half back.

Frankston has one more practice match — against Williamstown on Friday night.

“We’ll probably be pretty close to where we think we’re at this Friday against Willy,’’ Kornberg said.

“I think we’ll go with probably 24 this week and that will be thereabouts…things can change but I think we’re narrowing down to what the best 23 will look like.’’

Frankston will host Williamstown in Round 1 on Friday, March 22, at Kinetic Stadium, at 7.35pm.
