Victorian Amateur Football Association: One of the last unbeaten sides in suburban footy, Whitefriars, has gone 13-from-13

After winning 13 on the trot, Whitefriars is one of the last unbeaten teams going round. Coach Kristian Height said good team efforts all year have been the key.

Whitefriars stopped MHSOB in their tracks at Melbourne High School on Saturday.

Remaining undefeated for the Division 2 season, the Friars kept the Unicorns scoreless for the entire second half and ran away with another compelling victory 11.16 (82) to 2.5 (17).

With finals looming, Whitefriars’ current form looks unstoppable and it boasts 13 straight wins for the season.

For coach Kristen Height, this week’s win was down to the team’s quick thinking and ability to execute on-field strategies.

“The opposition brought a style of game where we had to adapt our game style and our structures a little bit,” Height said. “What I was really pleased with was the players were able to work that out on field.

“Once we worked that out, we started playing some really good footy and obviously had a good result.”

Whitefriars were just two points up at halftime, but managed to slot another six unanswered goals in the third quarter.

“Our defence held true, took a lot of good intercept marks and our midfield started to win the midfield battle which then limited their inside 50s,” Height said.

Jordan Wright, Height and James Connellan all slotted two majors while jack-of-all-trades Samuel Kieseker impressed at both ends of the ground.

“Sam Kieseker was our best player today. He played a combination of up forward and down back – he took a lot of good marks and was in the play a fair bit,” Height said.

“(It was) just a good team performance which has been happening all year.

“We’ve had guys step up when required and we haven’t relied on any individual at all throughout the season so we’re happy where we’re going.”

In Premier this week, Old Trinity derailed Old Carey with a win that moves them further away from the relegation zone, 13.12 (90) to 9.7 (61), while in Premier C, Marcellin Old Collegians battled gamely in its win against Hampton Rovers 12.11 (83) to 9.12 (66).

And in Division 2, Bulleen Templestowe suffered a crushing 43-point loss to Brunswick NOBS after being in front at halftime 15.11 (101) to 8.10 (58).
