Caulfield Grammarians believed they just missed out on recruiting Brett Eddy earlier in the year.

They’ve got him now.

The champion Eastern league goalkicker has joined the VAFA Premier club for this season and 2021.

Eddy, 30, has spent the past two years with Vermont, playing in premiership sides and having returns of 74 and 66 goals.

He won the league medal last year.

The long-kicking right-footer played three AFL games for Port Adelaide in 2017, an extension of his outstanding performances with South Adelaide and Port Adelaide in the SANFL.

He topped the league goalkicking twice.

But while Eddy flourished in South Australian football, he is from country Victoria, calling Foster in South Gippsland home.

He emerged from the Alberton league to play with Sandringham and Collingwood in the VFL, and with De La Salle in the VAFA.

Former Vermont coach Harmit Singh said Eddy was in the top three local footballers in the state.

“He’s so strong and powerful, and incredibly quick and agile for a big fella, great skills on both sides of his feet,’’ Singh said.

“He’s very intelligent too, has a lot football smarts. One day he could make a really good coach because he sees the game very well.’’

With Jake Best and Andrew Ainger, Eddy gave Vermont the most potent forward line in suburban football. He came in at No 3 on Leader’s list of the best local footballers.

Grammarians coach Simon Williams said this morning: “It’s a great credit to the club that we’ve been able to recruit him, and he’s going to be a massive resource.

“Last year we had Brendon Goddard come in and he was invaluable really, for the young guys and myself personally. And now it’s going to be amazing to have someone like Brett, with all his experience, in local footy and higher footy.’’

Williams confirmed the club had a dash at landing Eddy before the start of the season.

Promoted after winning Premier B, Caulfield Grammarians have recruited well for their rise to the top grade of the VAFA, securing former AFL Giant and Hawk Jonathan O’Rourke and Balwyn captain and former Caulfield Grammar student and 1st XVIII captain Rennie Gilchrist.

Eddy and O’Rourke are among a large contingent of ex-AFL players to link with VAFA clubs in 2020.

It includes David Armitage (Collegians), Tom Boyd (St Kevin’s), Matt Dea (University Blacks), Jay Kennedy-Harris (University Blues) and Patrick Kerr (St Kevin’s) and former Hawthorn champion Sam Mitchell, who has a clearance pending for Hawthorn Amateurs.

The VAFA board will meet on July 6 to make a decision about its season.
