St Kevin’s win against Fitzroy wasn’t one for the history books, nor is it one coach Anthony Lynch is rushing back to watch.
Lynch’s side came away with a 10.10 (70) to 9.4 (58) win but the senior mentor admitted he wasn’t entirely pleased.
“We played well for the last 15 minutes, we started to make better decisions with the footy,” he said.
“Instead of just bombing away, we made the ground big. Earlier in the game, we kept falling into bad habits.
“Sometimes you can win playing ugly and lose playing well. We need to improve quickly though.
“It’s not a game we’ll review too heavily, the sooner we move on from it the better.”
Lynch said it was important for his side to get across the line in captain Sam Critchley’s 100th game for the club.
Critchley was among the best and played a key role in the game’s dying stages.
“Before he came back in 2017, we tried a number of times to get him back,” he said.
“The success he has had since then has obviously been well documented and again he stood up for us in a key moment.”
Young gun Billy McGee Galimberti once again impressed in a best on ground display while Liam Gunson won plaudits from the coach.
Patrick Kerr finished with three goals while Nicholas Sing played a key role in defence.
“Our experienced guys and young fellas really stood up,” Lynch said.
“Kerr had a real impact in the last quarter and helped to swing the game in our favour.”
Sing is in his second season with SKOB after previously playing with Hoppers Crossing in the WFNL.
After dealing with “recurring” hamstring injuries last year, Lynch is hopeful he has a cleaner run in coming weeks.
“He had a massive pre-season to get his body right,” he said.
“When he has played, he’s been really important for us down back.”
St Kevin’s will next take on Old Scotch.
