Old Haileybury has secured a mid-season bonus with the signature of ex-AFL Demon James Magner.

Magner, 35, played 19 games with Melbourne across 2012 and 2013 after winning a best and fairest at VFL level with Sandringham in 2011.

The prolific midfielder was a pivotal cog in a decorated Berwick team that played in a plethora of grand finals before joining SFNL club St Kilda City.

Magner played three matches for City this season, kicking 11 majors and being named in the best on two occasions.

He hasn’t played for the Saints since May 6.

Bloods coach Daniel Ward said he is excited for his young group to be surrounded by another experienced player.

“Obviously he’s played at the highest level, has a lot of experience and is someone that looks after himself,” he said.

“He will come in and help us by playing a role, the main thing will be his leadership and experience to help our young group for sure.

“We’re not expecting him to come in, play in the middle and get 40 touches, there might be the odd opportunity to go in there but he will play other roles.

“Like I said, it’ll be everything else he brings: voice, direction.

“That will be really beneficial for our young group, we can be a quiet group at times, so to get some senior heads and louder voices out there is definitely beneficial.”

Magner joins Mitch Oman as the latest clearance out of St Kilda City.
