NFL Team of the Year and Preston Bullants premiership star returns to club

Winless after the opening month of the VAFA Premier C season, Preston Bullants have received a massive boost with the return of a premiership hero.

Winless Preston Bullants are set for a massive boost with the return of a premiership star.

Damon Marcon has entered a clearance to his junior club for the rest of the VAFA Premier C season from Northern league power Greensborough.

Marcon played in the Bullants 2013, 2014 and 2016 VAFA premierships, winning best-on-ground medals in the 2014 and 2016 triumphs.

He joined NFL club Epping in 2018, winning a place in the Division 2 Team of the Year and finishing second in the league goalkicking award with 39 goals in 18 games.

The dangerous midfield-forward crossed to Greensborough for 2019 but his season was curtailed by injury, making seven senior appearances.

Preston coach George Wakim was rapt to welcome back a Bullants favourite son.

“He’s a good player and we’re really excited to have him back,” Wakim said.

“Damon played a lot of his football at the junior club and is good mates with a lot of the boys.

“He was contemplating whether he wanted to play or not, so he hasn’t trained much with Greensborough this season.

“He’ll be a really good acquisition, if we get the clearance he’ll play in the reserves this week then we’ll take it from there.”

The Bullants have been beset by injuries in a difficult introduction to Premier C.

Preston was welcomed to the level with an 85-point thrashing from Monash Blues in Round 1 and 82-point hammering from Ormond in Round 2 before improved showings against Old Geelong and Old Mentonians.

The likes of Tom Hill, Gerard Sutton, Lewis Fotheringham (all one game), Ben Irving and James King (both two games) have barely been seen this season with 34 players used in just four games.

However, Wakim is confident a breakthrough win is just around the corner.

“It’s been a rude awakening,” he said.

“Once we get that win things will start improving, we’ll get some belief and faith, but it has been a significant step up – more so than previous promotions.

“The first game was against (Monash Blues) who came down and I think is the best team in the comp, Round 2 was against Ormond who finished third and the third game was against the other side that came down.

“This week we’ve got (Hampton Rovers) who beat one of the top two teams (Ormond) last week, so we’ve certainly had a baptism of fire.”

Preston sits ninth on the ladder ahead of fellow promotion winners UHS-VU while Mazenod and Marcellin have only one win each.
