Hazell steps down, McBean steps up at St Bedes Mentone Tigers

Tigers assistant Adrian McBean has accepted the senior coaching job after Michael Hazell moved aside to focus on other areas at the Premier B club.

The roles have been reversed.

Again.

When Adrian McBean was coaching VFL club Northern Blues’ Development League team, Michael Hazell assisted him.

When Hazell coached St Bedes Mentone Tigers last year, McBean assisted him.

Now comes another shuffle in rank and responsibility.

After one season in charge of the Tigers, Hazell has stood down as senior coach.

McBean has replaced him but Hazell will help him and also work in off-field areas at Brindisi St.

“Having brought a group of senior coaches to the club in 2019, Michael felt that transitioning the senior role to one of his assistant coaches — subject to an interview process with other applicants and committee appointment — would enable him to spend more time focusing on the areas of recruitment and retention, coach development across the club, junior development, leadership, transition of Under 19 players to senior football, and assisting the committee,’’ the club said in a statement.

“These were areas which Michael felt extra resources needed to be put into in order for the club to continue its progression.

“The club is incredibly grateful to Michael as senior coach for 2019 and for bringing together a strong team of assistant coaches to carry the club forward.’’

McBean was senior coach of Rosebud in 2017-18 and of Lara in 2015-16.

He spent four years with the Northern Blues as a Development League and assistant coach and also had a stint with Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup.

This year was his first in the VAFA scene and he said it was enjoyable.

“It’s a different competition, it’s a different brand of football, fast, and the players are very coachable, good listeners, willing to learn,’’ McBean said.

“Our season was pretty predictable, unfortunately. We pretty much beat everyone around us but couldn’t beat the top three above us.

“We’ve certainly got the potential for a lot of development. The Under 19s have been really strong and the school had a good result in the Herald Sun Shield.

“I think we played 52 players in our senior side this year, so we certainly had a look at a few.

“Pushing forward there will be opportunities for players to be rewarded for form.’’

He said the club hoped to lock in two key recruits in the next fortnight and would be striving to retain all its senior players.

“There’s a great challenge in front of us,’’ McBean said of the Tigers, who finished 9-9 and fifth on the ladder in Premier B.

“I’ll be brutally honest, we want to play finals and we want to get back to A grade.’’
