VAFA has rewarded last year’s coaches who guided the Big V to success against Perth Football League by re-appointing them for this year’s return match-ups in Western Australia.
Greg Hutchison and Paul Groves have been announced as coaches of the men’s and women’s team as the VAFA prepare for its first interstate representative games since 2018.
Big V women dominated its Perth rivals with a 63-point win in last year’s representative contest at Elsternwick Park with the men surviving a thriller against Perth to win in extra time by 19 points after scores were locked at 104 points each at full time with both games live streamed on KommunityTV.
Hutchison, who played 96 games in the AFL with Melbourne, resumes the role after previously being involved as coach with Old Brighton in the VAFA, guiding them to the 2017 Premier Division premiership.
“I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to coach the best players in the competition against the Perth League and to showcase the talent in both leagues,” he said.
“Representing the Big V is a huge honour, and all involved, coaches, players, support staff have fond memories of the 2023 game and are extremely committed to ensure we represent the VAFA in highest manner by bringing the cup back home.”
It’s a similar feeling for Groves who guided the Western Bulldogs AFLW team to premiership success in 2018 and is currently involved with Old Melburnians as an assistant coach.
“I’m extremely fortunate to be able to coach the women’s team for a second year and build on the fantastic return to rep footy from last year,” he said.
“The willingness of the women to engage fully in a four to five week program and represent their clubs in such a fantastic manner makes it a privilege to
lead.
“It’s exciting that our VAFA women get the opportunity to take on the Perth Footy League on their home turf and look forward to seeing the club’s nominations early on in the 2024 season.”
Clubs will be able to nominate its players to trial for places in the Big V teams in May.
