In a titanic struggle at Gordon Barnard Reserve, Old Camberwell threw everything at top-of-the-table Williamstown CYMS but came away disappointed after a game they could have won.

Looking to reverse a 107-point thumping at the hands of the Seagulls in round one, the Wellers put up a brave fight and led at three-quarter time before finally going down 17.10 (112) to 13.10 (88).

With his side sitting in fourth spot with two rounds to go, coach Anson Brownless can take a lot of heart from the game, safe in the knowledge that Old Camberwell can hold its own against the best in the competition

“I am disappointed for sure but when you sit back and reflect on the game, we did really well and it was just some inexperience at key moments that cost us,” he said.

“It was one of the quickest games I have seen all year actually and it had a real finals atmosphere.

“Our intensity was the best I have seen and that was against the best team in the competition, so really we can take a lot of positives from it.”

With the Wellers up by eight points at the final change it looked like an upset was in the making.

“We looked good up to three-quarter time and it was a hard game. But we made a few mistakes in the last quarter and they kicked a few great goals,” Brownless said. “In reality it was all over in a five-minute period. I guess that’s why they are such a great side, we had the momentum but you can’t give them an inch because they are a seriously good side and will make you pay.”

With 19-year-old rookie Callum Hensby taking the ruck duties, Brownless was able to push former Hawthorn AFL star Robbie Campbell forward and it paid dividends

“I had to do a few different things today,” he said. “They had some VFL players playing so I mixed things up a bit and Callum did a great job in the ruck which allowed Campbell to push forward and he bagged a couple of goals for us.”

Both Hensby and Campbell were well supported by onballer Jimmy Allen, who snagged three goals, and the reliable Robert West, who has had a great month of football.

In other Premier C games this week, St Mary’s Salesian was never in the hunt against Old Geelong, going down 22.13 (145) to 3.5 (23).

In Premier, St Kevin’s bounced back after last round’s loss, with a 22-point win over Old Scotch, 12.10 (82) to 8.12 (60), while Kew played host to Oakleigh in Division 1 this week and suffered a 17.12 (114) to 10.8 (68) defeat.

In Division 3, Hawthorn remains in second spot on the ladder, despite going down to Westbourne Grammarians 12.19 (91) to 10.11 (71), while Swinburne University was too strong for Canterbury, 17.14 (116) to 12.12 (84).
