A new women’s football side on the Mornington Peninsula will kick off in 2020.
Peninsula Old Boys FC will team up with Beleura Junior FC to field a senior female side in the VAFA women’s competition.
It means girls from Beleura will have a pathway into senior football.
Also, girls from Peninsula Grammar now have an opportunity to continue their football careers after finishing school.
Peninsula Grammar fielded a First XXII girls team this year.
“Beleura originally approached POB a couple of years ago to play under our license in the VAFA and it has taken a few years to get everything sorted but we are ready to go for 2020,’’ Peninsula Pirates president Jamie Rhodes said.
The clubs have combined their logos to create an emblem to signify the coming together of the two clubs.
“We see this as a fantastic opportunity for the two clubs to create a long-lasting partnership into the future,’’ Rhodes said.
Rhodes said all female players have an open invitation to come down and play football at the Pirates in season 2020.
The new women’s side, to be coached by Lee Marriott, will play out of Peninsula Grammar in Mt Eliza.
“We couldn’t be happier with the opportunity to align with Beleura JFC to create our first ever women’s team in 2020,” Rhodes said.
“We have always seen our club as a great family club and believe that both clubs share very similar values.
“Having played against several clubs with women’s teams this year, it was evident that having a women’s team brings a really positive dynamic to any club and that is definitely something that we are looking forward to in 2020.’’
