The inaugural Victorian Amateur Football Association women’s season moved into its finals series this weekend with first and second semi-finals in all five divisions.
In the Premier ranks, St Kevin’s moved directly into the grand final after a 6.9 (45) to 1.0 (6) win over Fitzroy in the second semi-final at the Basil St Reserve on Saturday.
In the first semi-final, Marcellin eliminated neighbours Old Trinity after a 6.9 (45) to 3.6 (24) win at Bulleen Park.
Fitzroy and Marcellin will now clash in the preliminary final at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday with the winner having a crack at St Kevin’s in the grand final the following week.
In Development Division 1, West Brunswick edged out St Mary’s Salesian in a thrilling second semi-final at Ransford Oval, 1.2 (8) to 1.1 (7), to book a grand final berth, while Beaumaris defeated Old Haileybury 3.9 (27) to 3.4 (22) in the first semi-final at Caulfield’s Princes Park.
St Mary’s Salesian and Beaumaris will do battle in the cut throat preliminary final at Bill Lawry Oval on Saturday.
In Development Division 2, Old Camberwell progressed to the season-decider after a 3.6 (24) to 2.6 (18) win over Collegians in the second semi-final at Gordon Barnard Reserve while Old Carey booked itself a preliminary finals place after a 9.6 (60) to 3.8 (26) win over Ivanhoe in the first semi-final at the Carey Sports Complex.
The last roll of the dice for Collegians and Old Carey comes at Bill Lawry Oval this Saturday.
Mazenod moved directly into the Development Division 3 grand final after a thrilling 2.5 (17) to 2.3 (15) win over Ajax in the second semi-final at Gary Smorgon Oval on Sunday.
Old Mentonians beat Hampton Rovers in the first semi-final at the Keysborough Playing Fields, 6.5 (41) to 1.0 (6) and will now meet Ajax in the preliminary final at Trevor Barker Oval on Sunday.
And, in Development Division 4, Hawthorn is celebrating a place in the very first grand final after a 6.9 (45) to 3.4 (22) win over South Melbourne Districts in the second semi-final at Rathmines Rd Reserve on Saturday.
At the Basil St Reserve, St Kevins claimed the first semi-final, 3.3 (21) to 2.2 (14) against Swinburne University, and will now have a shot at the season-decider when it takes on South Melbourne Districts in the preliminary final at the Bill Lawry Oval.
