THERRY Penola has retained its connection to Windy Hill with the appointment of former Bomber Damien Peverill as coach.
Peverill, who played 144 games for Essendon during an eight-year AFL career, has replaced his ex-Bombers teammate Dean Rioli at the helm of the VAFA Division 1 club.
“Getting Damien is a good pick-up for our group,” president Rod Moran said.
“His experience at the AFL level … and then moving into the coaching realms and playing in the EDFL, he brings that experience.
“But I also just think Damien has worked hard to get to where he got to and he can bring that to our group.”

The 39-year-old featured for Aberfeldie after his AFL career ended in 2008 and served as an assistant coach with the Essendon District club.
He also held a coaching role with Collingwood’s VFL team.
Originally from Keilor Park, Peverill was rookie-listed by Essendon in 2001 after previously being on Melbourne’s list.
“We have got a group of players that want to be successful and they want to work hard,” Moran said.
“I think he will bring that too.”
Rioli served as Therry Penola coach for one season, stepping down in September due to increasing work and family commitments.
“Dean has been working behind the scenes with Damien,” Moran said.
“In fact, Dean got Damien to Aberfeldie. They had that relationship.
“Once we got Damien into the picture, we used our (connections) with the Essendon guys, Dean and Jordan Bannister in particular, to talk to Damien.”
The Oak Park club has lauded Rioli’s impact during his one-year tenure, declaring he had “left a legacy on a lot of players”.
The Lions finished with a 12-6 record and qualified for Division 1 finals, but went down by one point in a semi-final against Oakleigh.
Peverill, who has signed as a non-playing coach, will take charge of the club for the first time when Therry Penola’s pre-season starts on Monday.
