Old Brighton made it two wins on the trot and consolidated third spot on the Premier ladder, accounting for an inaccurate De La Salle at Waverley Oval on Saturday.

Seven points up at halftime, and needing a win to stay in touch with the top four, De La Salle made hard work of the second half and went down 9.13 (67) to 12.7 (79).

“Today would have been a good one to win,” coach Paul Satterley said. “With Old Trinity who are in fourth spot losing today, it still leaves us a game and half out of fourth spot but there are maybe five teams in the same position.

“The disappointing thing about it is we had our chances today. We had the opportunity to get the job done and we didn’t.

“We missed some sitters and in the first quarter for example, we had nine shots on goal and we could only kick three goals three behinds.

“It was deflating really, we had a heap of the footy, a lot more inside 50s, more shots on goal but we just couldn’t kick them.”

With captain Tom Humphrey playing his 150th game, De La Salle had everything to play for but it was the Tonners that finished the better, with an eight-goal second half while De La could only manage four majors.

“It was two contrasting styles, they were a bash and crash surging type of team moving it forward and our go was run and carry and get it out wide but we just couldn’t finish our work off,” Satterley said.

Also in Premier, St Kevin’s stopped St Bedes/Mentone’s winning run, 15.11 (101) to 12.8 (80), while Old Xaverians moved into sixth place, level on points with De La Salle, after a convincing 16.14 (110) to 6.8 (44) win over Old Melburnians.

In Premier C, Old Geelong made it back-to-back wins with a straight forward victory over Old Mentonians, 17.14 (116) to 7.7 (49).

Prahran Assumption moved a step closer to a Division 1 finals berth with a 42-point win over West Brunswick.

The surprise defeat of Preston Bullants by Kew saw the Two Blues move to fifth on the ladder, one game behind Oakleigh but with a superior percentage.

In a tight, low-scoring contest at Ransford Oval, the Two Blues always had control from the moment Jon Simonetta kicked the only goal of the first quarter after 10 minutes.

Three quick Prahran Assumption goals to open the second quarter then took the game out West Brunswick’s reach.

Brett Dickinson dominated the big man duels giving generous supply to on ballers Dan Freeman and James Musster, while key forwards Jack Matherson (4) and Brent Chapman (2) were on-song.

And, Division 2, MHSOB went down to a rampaging Whitefriars outfit, 12.4 (76) to 15.11 (101).
