REPORT: FRIARS’ FAIRYTALE HAS PERFECT FINISH
“I’m very excited to have a crack as a first-year coach,” he said.
“I’m at the junior school at St Kevin’s and I was an assistant coach with the First XVIII in the APS, which is a great standard of footy.
“The club has put no real expectations on me as a first-year coach, which is good, but I’ve got high expectations of myself.
“I’d love to play finals footy in Division 1 next year and not putting any ceiling on anything with a young group, just letting them play and see where we can go.”
NOBS earned promotion this season after finishing runners-up behind undefeated Whitefriars to bounce straight back up after relegation in 2018.
The club overcame mid-season turmoil when coach Anthony Palmer was dismissed, reaching the Division 2 grand final under caretaker Peter Carter.
The club will now look to cement itself back in Division 1 with O’Dwyer outlining his plans for the off-season.
“They did such a great job during the year, after a few things happened, to regather and play off in the grand final says a lot about the playing group,” he said.
“After losing the grand final but still getting promoted there’s a bit of fire in the belly I think.
“I’m looking at some young kids that have played good footy out in the country that have moved to Melbourne and don’t want to travel.
“There’s quite a few that I’m talking to and I’d also like to get a couple more experienced players in as well.”
Nicholas Burgin was crowed the 2019 best-and-fairest after a stellar season, which also included Team of the Year honours alongside teammates Jed Carey, Chris Ford and Dom Sullivan.
