AFL South East has announced the decision to cancel the South Eastern Women’s Football (SEWF) competition for the 2020 season.

A meeting was held with club representatives on Monday and the majority of clubs stated they would not be fielding teams this year due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Interest from some clubs had also waned since Monday night’s meeting due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak.

Meanwhile, AFL South East today announced that it would not proceed with the administration of a modified football and netball competition across the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) in 2020.

AFLSE canvassed MPNFL clubs and explored in depth the opportunity of hosting a modified model of competition since the official MPNFL season was cancelled after an online meeting of club presidents on Saturday, June 27.

Following this meeting a decision was reached to cancel official competitions encompassing seniors, reserves and under 19 football and all grades of netball.

Despite the premiership season being cancelled, the league remained open to exploring club interest in a shortened, more informal opt-in/opt-out model of competition. Approximately half of the 22 MPNFL clubs showed initial interest in competing in a modified format.

“But with the most recent tightening of crowd restrictions and with the health and safety of the MPNFL football and netball community the number-one priority, the decision became clear to cancel the option of administering a modified season this year,’’ an AFLSE statement said.

Despite this decision a small minority of MPNFL clubs are still expressing interest in arranging practice matches with other clubs.

Frankston and District Junior Football League (FDJFL) and South East Juniors (SEJ) have

announced the start of their seasons has been postponed until Sunday, July 26.
