FRANKSTON YCW has turned to one of its own to continue its stunning run of premierships.

Long-time assistant coach Wayne Capp, 53, has been appointed coach of the Stonecats, who will be gunning for a fourth successive flag next year.

While this will be his first job as a senior coach, Capp has vast experience; he played more than 230 games with Hampton Rovers, coached juniors sides for nearly a decade and for the past four seasons has been YC’s assistant coach under Bugs Barry and Scott Mathers.

He says he is well equipped to take charge.

“It’s been a pretty good learning curve and apprenticeship under those two guys (Barry and Mathers),’’ he said.

“I was pretty keen to have a crack at it. I’ve got a really good knowledge of all our players, having worked so closely with them over the past few years. And working closely with Scott, with pretty good knowledge of the opposition, so the time was right for me to take it on now. When Scott stood down I thought I’d put my hand up.’’

Frankston YCW official John Coburn said Capp was “clearly the best applicant’’ for the job.

“The recommendation was made by a panel of people who have been involved in our coach selection process since the appointment of Doug Koop in 2003,’’ he said.

“Since that time the Stonecats have not missed finals and of course have won eight premierships, including six in the last seven years. Wayne Capp was clearly the best applicant.’’

Capp said he doesn’t feel any pressure to continue YCW’s flag spree.

“I don’t really see it like that. I’ve been involved for a long time with this team now and we just know that it’s hard work each year a don if we put ourselves up there at the end of the year we’ll see what happens come finals. But I don’t feel any pressure like that,’’ he said.

Capp said his coaching style will be “hands on’’.

“I’m a pretty passive person. So I’m not going to be a ranting or raving type of guy,’’ he said.

“That’s not my go. Give them the direction and keep it pretty simple and with the experience our guys have got they just want to know what their role is and they’ll go and do their job.’’

Former YCW reserves coach Steve Reidy will return to the club to be Capp’s assistant, along with Pat Barry.
