With four rounds of the MPFNL Division 1 season remaining, it’s time to identify the 22 most influential players on the run to the finals.
These men are likely to decide the 2023 premiership.
Jake Aarts, Dromana
The ex-Richmond dasher has played a starring role in Dromana’s unbeaten run, using his pace and experience to strong effect. How good would it be to see him in full flight at Frankston Park in September?
Finlay Bayne, Mt Eliza
Quality performer who was in sizzling form before jetting off to Europe, where he kept up his fitness by running with the bulls. He’s back soon and can be a big-time performer in finals.
Nick Collier, Dromana
The grandson of Albert Collier (a six-time VFL/AFL premiership player, Brownlow medallist and three-time Copeland medalist) is making a name for himself as a tough and talented player. Can play everywhere but has been used mostly in the backline by the undefeated Tigers.
Brenton Credlin, Frankston YCW
Quality player who’s been in great form and he knows what it takes to win finals and premiership cups.
Sam Fowler, Dromana
The man they call “Rat” has been at his dynamic best this season, kicking 29 goals and grabbing nine mentions in the best, while inspiring the unbeaten Tigers. A proven performer in finals, especially at Frankston Park.
Russell Gabriel, Pines
Big Russ continues to perform at a high level; strong, competitive and a true leader. A quality ruckman is vital at any time, especially in finals.
Billy Geurts, Dromana
Arguably the premier ruckman in the league, brilliant Billy seemingly never plays a bad game. Went off with a leg injury last weekend but the Tigers will be hoping he recovers in time to lead their premiersharp charge.
Shannon Gladman, Sorrento
Has taken his game to another level this season, with 11 mentions in the best from 14 games. If the Sharks can somehow lift themselves off the canvas and grab a finals berth, this gun will be leading the charge.
Jarrad Grant, Frankston Bombers
The ex-Bulldog and Sun has kicked 36 goals in 14 games and has genuine X-factor, which could be crucial at Frankston Park in September.
Johnathan Haidon, Pines
The ex-VFL player is back playing quality football after an injury-hit couple of years. A star performer at his best.
Khan Haretuku, Frankston Bombers
The champion big man holds the key to finals success for the Bombers. He sets the standard, provides power and presence. Has kicked 20 goals in 14 games.
Guy Hendry, Pines
The bustling big man gives the Pythons a competitive edge and can play forward or back.
Matthew La Fontaine, Frankston YCW
Was outstanding in last season’s grand final victory and has the versatility to make an impact in the midfield or up forward, where he can cause a bit of damage and kick goals.
Nicholas MacDonald Girolami, Mt Eliza
Has found his place as a key back playing on any number of opponents, both big and small. Has great athleticism, is a strong mark and a great field kick. One of the best young Redlegs to emerge this season.
Ned Moodie, Pines
The young gun is with Casey Demons but has played some cracking games this season on a wing for the Pythons.
Blake Mullane, Frankston YCW
The reigning league medallist is having another top season, providing energy and class to a strong Stonecats midfield.
Josh Patullo, Frankston YCW
The Bulldogs VFL big man is having a ripping season for the Stonecats, with 35 goals and seven mentions in the best from 10 games. He’s nursing a slight injury that could see him miss a game or two but he’ll play a vital role in finals.
Fraser Phillips, Mt Eliza
The ex-Carlton listed forward is back from a hernia operation and has played the past two games. Could be very handy in finals.
Billy Quigley, Dromana
Never gives less than 100 percent, leads from the front and is a passionate Tiger.
Dane Swan, Pines
The Collingwood premiership player and Brownlow medallist is hungry for one more flag. His poise and game awereness strengthens the Pythons’ backline, and he can go forward and hit the scoreboard too.
Shane Savage, Pines
The former AFL Hawk and Saint has been named in the Pythons best in 10 of his 14 games this season. His running and kicking ability will be crucial in the heat of a final.
Nathan Scagliarini, Mt Eliza
Leads by example, hunts the footy with ferocity and is having another tremendous season.
