Sunbury Kangaroos not getting ahead of themselves after knocking off Burnside Heights

Sunbury Kangaroos coach Anthony Leydin is keeping the lid firmly on at Eric Boardman Reserve.

After transferring from the Riddell District Football League, the Kangaroos have made an undefeated start to their maiden Essendon District Division 2 campaign.

The Kangaroos followed up their 229-point win over troubled Jacana with a crucial top-of-the-table road victory over Burnside Heights.

The 36-point defeat was the Bears’ first of the season and sent a warning to Sunbury’s premiership rivals.

However, Leydin remains cautious knowing the club cannot afford to get ahead of itself with a blockbuster clash with Moonee Valley looming.

“Your hopeful and optimistic but at the same time there’s a lot of uncertainty (entering a new league),” he said.

“We picked up a few players — lost just as many — so you never know how they’ll come together.

“We’re pretty pleased with where we’re at the moment but we realise there’s a long way to go.

“We’ve got a pretty mature group. With that experience comes a level head and Moonee Valley is probably going to be our toughest challenge so far.”

The Kangaroos were tested by Burnside Heights, trailing by six points at half-time before powering away in the second half.

Inaccuracy blighted Sunbury’s first half but a 9.3 second half was exactly the response Leydin was hoping for.

“We were a goal down at half-time and a goal up at three-quarter-time so we had the feeling we were running over the top of them,” he said.

“The conditions made scoring pretty difficult so we were pretty happy with how we finished the game off. It certainly wasn’t an easy game.”

Tierone Cuffe was best on ground in the win while Michael Kilty impressed up forward with four goals in the win.

The Kangaroos will have to combat Moonee Valley spearhead Rocky Ferraro on Saturday with the Fog gun coming off an 11-goal haul last week.
