Southern league: St Kilda City too good for East Malvern in Division 1

Former AFL forward Aaron Edwards had 14 scoring shots for St Kilda City, while two of his ex-Tigers teammates also starred in SFNL Division 1.

The former AFL Tigers were on the prowl in the Southern league on Saturday.

Aaron Edwards kicked 6.8 in St Kilda City’s win over East Malvern, proving he’s still a force at the age of 38.

Tyrone Vickery slotted five goals for Springvale Districts.

And Brett O’Hanlon booted four, including two “clutch” last quarter goals, to inspire Mordialloc to a nine-point win over Bentleigh.

Edwards, Vickery and O’Hanlon were together at Richmond in 2014.

St Kilda City coach Matt Hoy says Edwards has been a fantastic addition since returning from Deer Park earlier this season.

He’s kicked hauls of 2,4,5 and 6 in four games this season.

The Saints overcame a slow to beat East Malvern by 62 points, 14.16 (100) to 5.8 (38), and Edwards was a constant threat up forward.

“He could have walked with a bag if he’d kicked straight,” Hoy said.

Hoy said Edwards’ leadership, and in particular his connection with the young players, has been a stand-out.

“You know what you’re going to get on game day, it’s more about his leadership with the young guys that we really value around our group,” Hoy said.

“He’s a really good mentor, a good leader.

“Especially for someone who has played at the top level you can easily come back to this level and not really care. He’s a really good leader, instructive.’’

Hoy said Luke Potts, Tyrell Lafituanai and Matthew McNaughton were St Kilda City’s best players on Saturday.

The Saints are 6-2 and in third spot.

But the win came at a cost, with Jimmy Magner tearing a calf and Jayden Carter doing his hamstring in the first minute of the game.

Hoy said Magner faces a stint on the sidelines.

“It might be a three to six weeker, we’re not sure, he sort of felt like it was a bad one,” he said.

At Bentleigh, O’Hanlon drilled a set shot goal from outside 50 in the last quarter as Mordialloc stormed home to beat Bentleigh, 12.10 (82) to 11.7 (73).

“It was a beautiful kick,” Bloods coach Brendon Moore said.

“He’s been great for us, excellent.”

Mordialloc livewire James Keighley was best-on-ground for the third time in the past four games as the Bloods rallied after Bentleigh kicked five of the first six goals of the game.

“His is tackle pressure is unbelievable,’’ Moore said of Keighley.

“His pressure around the ball...he’s got unbelievable closing speed, he’s been great.”

Harrison Edwards also kicked four goals for Mordi, while ruckman Zinzile Mosimane, Ryan Santon, and Ben Stephenson were also among their best.

Vickery’s bag of five was a rare highlight for Springvale Districts in their thumping 122-point loss to Cheltenham, 26.13 (169) to 7.5 (47).

Chelt’s forwards ran hot, with Austin Johnson and Josh Fox kicking six goals apiece.

Declan McComb was best afield for the Rosellas, with Dylan Weickhardt, Daniel Vaughan, Jake Davis and Res Kilburn also dominating.

St Paul’s McKinnon improved its record to 6-2 with a 13.13 (91) to 9.13 (67) win over Dingley, with Matthew Kreymborg capping a best-on-ground display with five goals.

Cranboune continued its superb start in Southern league, beating Port Melbourne Colts by 40 points, 19.14 (128) to 13.10 (88). Zak Roscoe was brilliant with four goals and Bailey Buntine and Glenn Osborne starred.
